Canadian Rockies & Glacier National Park

Updated: Mar 26

Imagine paddling on crystal-clear lakes and conquering short hikes with jaw-dropping vistas – this isn't just a dream, it's part of our unforgettable 11-day adventure through 5 of the most breathtaking National Parks in the Rockies! Picture yourself cruising on the emerald hues of Emerald Lake in Yoho or the turquoise shores of Lake Louise in Banff. We, two complete beginners, unlocked the region's hidden gems, navigated the glacier-carved Icefields Parkway to the Going to the Sun Road, and soaked in the majestic beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Ready to ditch the Wi-Fi and embrace the magic for yourself? Throughout this blog, we'll share our unique itinerary, perfectly crafted for fellow beginners who are ready to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

Ready to start planning your adventure? Let's dive into our itinerary, where we'll break down each day's adventures, must-see locations, and hidden gems we discovered along the way.

While our itinerary included 3 days dedicated to travel, we maximized our time by strategically planning our route. This allowed us to conquer the 5 National Parks and experience their iconic sights without feeling rushed.

Gearing Up for Adventure!  We wasted no time in grabbing our wheels – a trusty Toyota Corolla from Turo. Our first mission? A strategic stop at Goodwill. Sure, it might sound unconventional, but scoring a perfectly-sized cooler for the backseat was a budget-savvy win! Now, stocked with groceries from a nearby store (think lunch-fixings for picnics and road trip snacks), we were officially road trip ready!

Our hearts pounded with excitement as we hit the road, embarking on a scenic 5.5-hour drive north on Route 93. Crossing the Canadian border marked a new chapter in our adventure. Within the first hour, we were captivated by the stunning turquoise waters of the Kootenay River, a vibrant ribbon that would become our constant companion for a while. We'd follow its course until it gracefully handed us off to the mighty Columbia River just south of Kootenay National Park.

Kootenay's Grand Entrance - A Natural Marvel Awaits!  Our first glimpse of Kootenay National Park sent shivers down our spines. The entrance was unlike anything we'd ever seen - a dramatic gateway carved by nature itself. Imagine navigating your car through a massive crack, flanked by towering 100-foot cliffs on either side! This was just the beginning of the magic that awaited us within Kootenay's borders. Quickly after this, we were pulled to the side of the road by a sight that stopped us in our tracks. The jade-hued Olive Lake shimmered invitingly just a few steps from the pull-off. From here, we continued our journey, captivated by the ever-changing scenery. Towering snow-capped peaks lined the roadway, their majestic forms mirrored in the still waters of the occasional alpine lake. The crisp mountain air energized us as we wound our way through the valleys, eager to reach the charming town of Banff.

Banff Atlas - The Mountain Town of all Mountain Towns! Our extended 8-hour drive, filled with countless photo stops, meant we arrived in Banff later than expected. But to our surprise, we were greeted by a breathtaking sunset! At the end of June, the days in Banff stretch on for an incredible 16 hours, offering endless possibilities for exploration. This unexpected bonus meant even more time to soak in the beauty of this incredible place.

Exhausted from our scenic (and extended) drive, we finally reached Banff. Our cozy basement cabin, a short walk from downtown, awaited us. While it might not have been the most luxurious accommodation, its location and affordability were perfect for our adventure-filled itinerary.

Banff's Unpredictable Beauty: A Day of Adaptations. Our first day in Banff was a masterclass in adapting to the unexpected. Our plan the first day was to drive the Icefield Parkway from Banff to Jasper, we hopped in the car and began our first adventure. We made a quick pit stop 45 minutes north in the town of Lake Louise. We fueled up at the local Shell and grabbed coffee and breakfast at the Javalanche Cafe, conveniently located right next door. The overcast sky and scattered rain cast a dramatic contrast on the emerald forest, setting the scene for an interesting day.

Arriving at the ranger station at the base of the Icefields Parkway, our initial plan hit a roadblock. A ranger issued a warning – a snowstorm was making the road impassable for regular vehicles. Looking outside, we saw no snow and a cool 50 degrees, so we were a bit skeptical. Deciding to venture on cautiously, we continued our journey.

As we reached Bow Lake, the light rain transitioned into flurries. The scene was surreal – low clouds shrouded the majestic mountains, and the lake shimmered with an ethereal teal hue as the snow intensified. With the weather worsening, we opted to hop back in our car and head 1.5 miles further to Peyto Lake.

Within a mere 7 minutes, the light snow transformed the landscape into a winter wonderland. Pulling into the Peyto Lake upper viewpoint parking lot, we were astonished to see over a foot of snow blanketing the ground.  We embarked on a 1-mile hike to the viewpoint. Though the clouds obscured the iconic Peyto Lake view, the experience itself – hiking through a sudden snowstorm – became one of the most magical hikes I've ever done.
